Variant Coding
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Variant coding is a coding implementation used by the Volkswagen Auto Group — VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche — assigning a multi-digit numerical code to each module defining its complete configuration. Unlike generic coding where parameters are toggled individually, VAG variant coding uses a single number where each digit controls different features. The variant code is determined by equipment level, market, engine, transmission, and options.
Variant coding is needed when replacing a VAG module, retrofitting equipment, converting market specifications, or resolving communication errors from incorrect coding. Wrong variant codes can cause disabled features, warning lights, or complete malfunction. Codes can be found through factory documentation, online VAG coding databases, or reading from an identical vehicle. Always document existing codes before changes.
