2008-2017 Volvo XC60 – How to Check and Add Engine Oil

Has the engine oil or check engine warning light come on in your 2008-2017 Volvo XC60? This guide will show you how to accurately check your engine oil level using the vehicle’s center display and maintain proper oil levels for optimal engine performance.

System Requirements

• The engine must be turned off and cool.
• The vehicle must be parked on a level surface.

Checking Oil Level

1. Locate and pull the hood release handle under the dashboard on the driver’s side.
2. Walk to the front of your vehicle and find the hood safety latch under the hood’s front edge. Push the latch to the side to fully release the hood.
3. Pull out the hood prop rod and secure it in place.
4. Find the oil dipstick, pull it out, and clean it with a paper towel.
5. Insert the dipstick all the way, pull it back out, and check the oil level using the markings at the bottom of the stick.
6. The markings should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” lines on the dipstick. If the oil level is close to or below the “MIN” line, add more oil.

Adding Oil Step-by-Step

1. Clean the area around the oil cap to prevent debris from falling into the reservoir.
2. Unscrew the oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise. Place the cap in a clean area.
3. Add oil slowly, no more than 1 quart (1 liter) at a time. Use a funnel to prevent spills.
4. Check the oil level using the dipstick. If it is close to the “MAX” line, stop adding oil.
5. Once you resume driving, monitor your dashboard for any warning messages during the process.
