About this video

Replacing the central airbag, steering wheel, and spiral cable in a BMW X3 F25 is a complex task that requires precision and attention to detail. Here’s a general outline of the process, but keep in mind that it’s crucial to consult the specific repair manual for your vehicle and have the necessary tools and expertise before attempting any DIY work on safety-critical components like airbags:

Disconnect the Battery: Before starting any work, disconnect the vehicle’s battery to prevent accidental airbag deployment.
Remove the Steering Wheel: Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the airbag cover on the steering wheel carefully. Behind the cover, you’ll find the airbag connectors. Disconnect these connectors and set the airbag aside in a safe place. Next, use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the steering wheel to the steering column. Once the bolts are removed, carefully pull off the steering wheel.
Replace the Spiral Cable: With the steering wheel removed, you’ll have access to the spiral cable (also known as the clock spring). This component connects the steering wheel’s electrical systems to the vehicle’s wiring harness while allowing for steering wheel movement. Remove any screws or clips holding the old spiral cable in place and disconnect it from the wiring harness. Install the new spiral cable, ensuring that it’s aligned correctly and securely attached to both the steering wheel and the wiring harness.
Install the New Steering Wheel: Position the new steering wheel on the steering column, aligning it with the shaft. Carefully thread the bolts back into place and tighten them securely with a socket wrench.
Reconnect the Airbag: Reconnect the airbag connectors behind the steering wheel and carefully snap the airbag cover back into place.
Reconnect the Battery: Once all components are securely in place, reconnect the vehicle’s battery.
Test: Before driving the vehicle, test the functionality of the airbag system and ensure that all electrical components on the steering wheel are working correctly.
Final Check: Double-check all connections and ensure that everything is properly tightened and aligned.

In this detailed DIY tutorial, we based on a 2011 BMW X3 equipped with a 3.0L gasoline engine and automatic transmission. This guide is applicable to BMW X3 models from 2011 to 2017 (F25 series).
