Check Engine Light On? How an ASE Mechanic Diagnoses It in Minutes

About this video

An ASE certified mechanic shows the fast, correct way to diagnose a check engine light using an OBD2 scanner. We demonstrate on a 2015-2023 Jeep Renegade (first generation BU, including the 2019 facelift), but this process works on any OBD2 vehicle from 1996 and newer, any make, any model. The goal is simple: stop guessing, stop buying parts you do not need, and find the actual cause.

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE Solid check engine light with the car driving normally Flashing check engine light, which usually means an active misfire, so stop driving Rough idle, misfire, hesitation, stumble, or stalling Reduced power, limp mode, or the car not revving past a certain RPM Poor fuel economy or a raw fuel smell Loose Gas Cap or Service Engine Soon message on the cluster Check engine light on together with traction control ESC or Stop/Start warnings

WHAT WE COVER Where the OBD2 port is and how to connect a scanner Reading stored, pending, and permanent codes, and why the difference matters Freeze frame data and what conditions set the code Live data and readiness monitors Using the code as a starting point instead of a parts list Confirming the repair and clearing codes properly

COMMON FAULT CODES Misfires P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 Lean and fuel trim codes P0171 and P0174 Oxygen sensor codes P0130 through P0161 Catalytic converter efficiency P0420 and P0430 EVAP leaks P0440, P0442, P0455, P0456, often just a gas cap Thermostat P0128, MAF P0101, and MAP P0106

The Jeep Renegade uses the 1.4L MultiAir Turbo, 2.4L Tigershark, and 1.3L Turbo engines. The 2.4L Tigershark is also found in the Jeep Compass, Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, and Ram ProMaster City, so the same codes and causes show up on those vehicles. The Renegade shares its platform with the Fiat 500X. The diagnostic method itself applies to Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Subaru, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and every other make.
