Clogged Heater Core Symptoms: Diagnose It Before You Pay for a Dash Removal
About this video
Car blowing cold air when the heat is on? Heat only works while driving, or only on one side? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic holds a heater core in hand to show how it works, why heater cores clog and fail, and exactly how to diagnose a clogged heater core before you replace parts. This matters because heater core replacement on many vehicles means pulling the entire dashboard, so you want to be sure before you spend the money.
SAFETY FIRST
Never open the radiator cap or coolant reservoir on a hot engine. The cooling system is under pressure and hot coolant can cause serious burns. Let the engine cool completely, keep hands clear of the cooling fan and belts when testing with the engine running, and clean up spilled coolant because it is toxic to pets and children.
WHAT WE COVER
How the heater core works as a small radiator behind the dash, with hot engine coolant flowing through it and the blower motor pushing air across the fins
How coolant gets to the heater core through the heater hoses, and the role of the water pump and thermostat
Why heater cores clog: old coolant, mixing coolant types, rust and scale, tap water instead of distilled water, sediment, and stop leak products
How a head gasket problem can contaminate the cooling system and plug the heater core
Clogged heater core versus leaking heater core, and the signs of each
Checking the coolant level and bleeding air pockets out of the system first
Feeling or measuring the inlet and outlet heater hoses: one hot and one cool points to a restriction
Using an infrared thermometer to compare temperatures across the system
Ruling out a stuck open thermostat, a weak water pump, a blend door actuator, or a heater control valve
Backflushing the heater core and when a flush can save it
SYMPTOMS OF A CLOGGED HEATER CORE
No heat or only lukewarm air from the vents
Heat that works while driving but goes cold at idle
Heat that gets warmer when you rev the engine
Hot air on one side of the cabin and cold air on the other
Gurgling or sloshing noise behind the dashboard
Slow defrost and windows that will not clear in winter
SYMPTOMS OF A LEAKING HEATER CORE
Sweet coolant smell inside the car
Greasy or foggy film on the inside of the windshield
Wet or damp carpet on the passenger floor
Coolant level dropping with no visible leak under the hood
RELATED FAULT CODES AND WARNING MESSAGES
A clogged heater core usually does not set a code on its own, but related problems often do. You may see P0128 coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature, P0125 insufficient coolant temperature for closed loop, P0117 or P0118 engine coolant temperature sensor circuit, P2181 cooling system performance, blend door and HVAC temperature sensor codes in the B1250 range, and U0164 lost communication with the HVAC module. Dash messages such as Low Coolant, Check Coolant Level, or Engine Overheating can also appear.
This is a universal diagnostic process that applies to nearly every make and model, including Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti, on cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans.
