Heat or A/C not working the way it should? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic shows how to diagnose a vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system the right way, using a full system bidirectional scan tool to pull HVAC codes, read live data, and run active tests. A Ford is used as the on screen example, but the same diagnostic approach applies to nearly every make and model, including Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
This matters because a basic code reader will not touch the HVAC system. Heating and air conditioning faults are stored in the HVAC control module or the body control module as B codes and U codes, not engine P codes, so a generic OBD2 scanner will usually show no codes at all even when the system is clearly broken. A full system bidirectional scan tool lets you talk to the HVAC module directly, watch what the system thinks is happening, and command parts to move so you can confirm a failure before spending money on parts.

SYMPTOMS THIS VIDEO HELPS YOU DIAGNOSE
No cold air from the A/C, or air that is only cool at idle
No heat, or heat that only works while driving
Hot air on one side and cold air on the other on dual zone systems
Temperature stuck on full hot or full cold no matter where you set the dial
Air only coming out of the defrost vents, or vents that will not change modes
Clicking, ticking, tapping, or knocking noise behind the dash when you start the car or change the temperature
Blower motor that only works on the highest speed
Blower motor that does not work at all
Recirculation button that does nothing
A/C compressor that never engages, or that short cycles on and off
Windows fogging up and slow defrost performance
Climate control screen, buttons, or knobs not responding
RELATED FAULT CODES AND WARNING MESSAGES
Because HVAC faults live in the climate control module, you will typically see B codes and U codes rather than check engine light codes. Depending on the vehicle you may find codes such as B1250, B1251, B1252, B1253, B1255, B1256, or B1257 for blend, mode, and recirculation door and temperature sensor circuits, B10A2 and similar body codes on newer platforms, U0164 for lost communication with the HVAC control module, and network U codes pointing at the body control module. On the engine side you may also see P0645 for the A/C clutch relay control circuit, P0532 or P0533 for A/C refrigerant pressure sensor circuit low or high, and P0128 or P0116 to P0118 for coolant temperature problems that keep the system from making heat. Some vehicles will also flash a Service A/C, A/C Off Due to High Engine Temp, or Climate Control Service Required message on the dash.
