Ford Escape Engine Air Filter Replacement (2013-2019)
About this video
Shops charge a lot for a part you can swap in a few minutes. In this video, an ASE certified mechanic shows you how to replace the engine air filter on a 2013-2019 Ford Escape (third generation, including the 2017 facelift).
WHAT WE COVER
Locating the air filter box under the hood
Releasing the airbox clips or fasteners without breaking them
Removing the old filter and cleaning debris out of the airbox
Installing the new filter so it seals properly
Avoiding damage to the mass air flow sensor and intake hose
How to tell when an air filter actually needs replacing
SIGNS YOUR ENGINE AIR FILTER IS DIRTY
Sluggish acceleration or slow turbo response on EcoBoost engines
Lower fuel economy than usual
Filter that looks gray or black, or has leaves and debris on it
Rough idle or hesitation in dusty driving conditions
Check engine light with airflow or lean codes such as P0101 or P0171 in severe cases
ENGINES AND RELATED MODELS
Applies to the 2.5L Duratec, 1.6L EcoBoost, 1.5L EcoBoost, and 2.0L EcoBoost engines. The Escape is sold as the Ford Kuga outside North America and shares its platform with the Lincoln MKC (2015-2019), so the airbox layout is very similar on those vehicles. The 2.0L EcoBoost is also found in the Ford Edge, Fusion, and Explorer, and the 1.5L EcoBoost in the Ford Fusion.
Quick tip: if you drive on gravel or dusty roads, check the filter at every oil change instead of waiting for the mileage interval.
