Ford F-150 Runs But Cluster, Radio and Climate Are Dead? ASE Master Tech Finds the Cause
About this video
Your Ford F-150 starts and drives, but the instrument cluster is dead, the radio and climate control do not work, there is no door chime, and the truck failed emissions because the test machine could not communicate with it. In this video, an ASE certified technician shows how to diagnose a no communication problem step by step on a 2018 Ford F-150, using a YOUCANIC full system scanner to see which modules are talking and which are not. The diagnosis leads to a faulty gateway module, the part that routes data between every network on the truck.
SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE
Engine runs and the truck drives, but the instrument cluster is blank or frozen
Radio, SYNC screen, and climate control dead or not responding
No door chime, no key in ignition chime, no turn signal click
Scan tool shows no communication or cannot identify the vehicle
Failed emissions or state inspection because the OBD2 test could not connect
Many warning lights or none at all, with gauges stuck at zero
Problems that come and go, or start after a battery change or jump start
SAFETY FIRST
Keep the battery connected and fully charged while scanning, since low voltage alone can knock modules offline. Turn the ignition off before unplugging any module, and disconnect the battery before working near airbag wiring or yellow connectors. Replace a blown fuse only with the same amp rating and never bypass a fuse.
WHAT WE COVER
Why the truck can run fine while half the electronics are dead
How the gateway module connects the scan tool port to every network on the truck
Checking battery voltage, fuses, and grounds before blaming a module
Running a full system scan to map which modules respond and which do not
Reading the pattern of lost communication codes to find the common link
Checking power, ground, and network wiring at the gateway module
Confirming the gateway module is faulty before replacing it
Why a replacement gateway module has to be programmed to the truck
Rescanning and confirming communication is restored so the truck can pass emissions
RELATED FAULT CODES AND WARNING MESSAGES
Lost communication codes stored across multiple modules, such as U0146 lost communication with gateway module, U0100 lost communication with the engine computer, U0140 lost communication with the body control module, U0155 lost communication with the instrument cluster, and U3000 control module faults. At the emissions station, the result is usually a no communication or unable to connect rejection rather than a failed reading.
DOES THIS APPLY TO MY TRUCK
This video is filmed on a 2018 Ford F-150, part of the thirteenth generation sold from 2015-2020, with the facelift arriving for 2018. The separate gateway module shown here is found on the 2018 2019 2020 facelift trucks with any engine, including the 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, 3.3L V6, and 3.0L Power Stroke diesel. On 2015 2016 2017 trucks the network layout is different, but the same diagnostic steps apply. The Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator from 2018 and up are built on the same platform and use a similar gateway module, as do Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 trucks from 2017 and up. The process of tracking down a no communication fault applies to most late model Ford and Lincoln vehicles.
