How to Check and Add Brake Fluid on a Ford Escape (2013-2019)
About this video
Brake light on, or the pedal feeling soft? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic shows you how to check and top off brake fluid on a 2013-2019 Ford Escape (third generation, including the 2017 facelift), and how to tell when low fluid is normal pad wear and when it means a leak.
SAFETY FIRST
Brake fluid damages paint and irritates skin and eyes, so wipe up spills right away and wear gloves and eye protection. If the pedal is soft or sinking, or the fluid keeps dropping, do not drive until the brakes are inspected.
WHAT WE COVER
Locating the brake fluid reservoir under the hood
Reading the MIN and MAX marks
Why fluid drops as brake pads wear
How to tell when low fluid means a leak instead
Checking fluid color and what dark fluid means
The correct fluid type, since Ford specifies a DOT 4 low viscosity fluid on this generation, so always check the reservoir cap
Topping off without contaminating the system
SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE
Red brake warning light on the cluster
Brake Fluid Level Low message
ABS and traction control lights on with the brake light
Soft, spongy, or sinking brake pedal
Dark brown or black brake fluid
Wet spots near the wheels or the master cylinder
RELATED MODELS
The Ford Kuga and Lincoln MKC (2015-2019) share this platform and use the same check, and the Ford Focus and C-Max of the same era follow nearly the same process.
Quick tip: brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Even if the level is fine, old fluid should be flushed on schedule.
