About this video

An ASE certified mechanic shows you how to check brake fluid level and condition on a 2015-2023 Jeep Renegade (first generation BU, including the 2019 facelift). Brake fluid is one of the most ignored fluids on a car and one of the most important. We cover what the MIN and MAX lines really mean, why a dropping level is often a wear indicator and not a leak, and how to tell when the fluid is due for a flush.

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE Red brake warning light or BRAKE lamp on the instrument cluster Service Brake System, Check Brake Fluid, or Low Brake Fluid message ABS and traction control ESC lights on along with the brake light Soft, spongy, or slowly sinking brake pedal Pedal that goes closer to the floor than it used to Brake fluid that looks dark brown or black instead of clear amber Wet spots or fluid film around the master cylinder, calipers, or inside the wheels Grinding or squealing brakes along with a low fluid level

WHAT WE COVER Locating the brake fluid reservoir and reading the MIN and MAX marks Why fluid drops as brake pads wear, and when low fluid means a leak instead Checking fluid color and what dark fluid tells you DOT 3 versus DOT 4 and why using the wrong fluid is a problem How brake fluid absorbs moisture and why that lowers the boiling point Topping off correctly without contaminating the system Typical brake fluid flush interval and why it matters for ABS components

RELATED FAULT CODES Brake fluid level switch and brake system codes such as C121C, C2200 series ABS module codes, and low pressure or ABS communication codes that can appear when the level drops or air enters the system.

The Jeep Renegade shares its platform with the Fiat 500X. The same check applies to the Jeep Compass, Cherokee, Wrangler, and Grand Cherokee, to Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram vehicles, and to nearly every car and truck from Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Subaru, Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
