How to Check Coolant Level on Ford Escape (2013-2019)
About this video
How to check the engine coolant reservoir on a Ford Escape, including where the coolant tank is located, how to read the MIN and MAX cold fill lines, what coolant type to use, and how to top off the system correctly without introducing air pockets.
This procedure applies to the third generation Ford Escape (2013-2019), including the 2017-2019 facelift models, with the 1.5L EcoBoost, 1.6L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, and 2.5L Duratec engines. The steps are shown here on a 2018 Ford Escape.
APPLIES TO OTHER VEHICLES
The Escape shares its platform, cooling system layout, and engines with several other vehicles, so this video also applies to:
Ford Kuga Mk2 (2013-2019, the European version of this Escape)
Lincoln MKC (2015-2019)
Ford Focus (2012-2018)
Ford C-Max and C-Max Hybrid (2013-2018)
Ford Fusion (2013-2020, 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost)
Ford Edge (2015-2024, 2.0L EcoBoost)
Ford Transit Connect (2014-2023)
SYMPTOMS THAT LEAD TO THIS CHECK
Low coolant warning message on the dash
“Engine coolant over temperature, stop safely now” message
Temperature gauge climbing toward the red
Sweet smell of coolant after driving
Puddle or dried orange residue under the front of the vehicle
Heater blowing cold air at idle
Coolant reservoir empty, overfilled, or dirty and brown
Steam or bubbling from the coolant tank
Coolant level dropping with no visible leak, which can point to a head gasket or coolant intrusion issue on the 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost engines

SAFETY NOTE
Never open the coolant reservoir cap on a hot engine. Let the engine cool completely so the system is not under pressure.
