About this video

Need to know your transmission oil temperature? On most modern Jeeps there is no transmission dipstick and no temperature gauge on the dash, so the only way to see the actual transmission fluid temperature is through the OBD2 port with a scan tool. In this video, we show you step by step how to read live transmission oil temperature data using a scanner, and we explain why this number matters more than most owners realize.

Knowing the transmission temperature is essential for several jobs. Checking or topping off the fluid level on a sealed transmission with no dipstick must be done with the fluid within a specific temperature range, or the level will be wrong. It also lets you catch transmission overheating early, whether from towing, low fluid, a failing cooler, or hard driving, before it turns into expensive damage. And if you are diagnosing shifting problems, harsh or delayed shifts when cold or hot can point you toward the cause. We show where to find the transmission temperature in live data using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II full-system scanner, what normal operating temperature looks like, and what temperatures should concern you.

We also cover related warning signs and fault codes, including the transmission over temperature message, limp mode, P0218 (transmission over temperature condition), and transmission fluid temperature sensor codes P0711, P0712, and P0713. A basic code reader usually cannot show transmission module live data, so a scanner with full-system access is required.

This video applies to all popular Jeep models, including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Gladiator, Patriot, and Liberty. The 9-speed automatic (948TE) shown here is also used in the Jeep Cherokee KL, Jeep Compass, Chrysler 200, Fiat 500X, and RAM ProMaster City, so this video applies to those vehicles as well, and the same method works on Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat transmissions.
