Chasing an intermittent misfire that never sets a code, or a random misfire code that won’t tell you which cylinder is the problem? In this video, we show you how to go beyond reading fault codes and look at the actual misfire count data stored in the engine computer, including Mode 6 (Mode $06) on-board monitoring data and live per-cylinder misfire counters, to pinpoint exactly which cylinder is misfiring and how often.

Reading codes only tells you part of the story. A P0300 random multiple misfire code doesn’t tell you which cylinder to focus on, and an intermittent misfire may not set any code at all even though you can feel the engine stumble, shake at idle, or hesitate under acceleration. The engine control module constantly counts misfire events per cylinder, and with the right scanner you can view current misfire counts, history misfire counts, and Mode 6 misfire monitor test results to catch the problem cylinder in the act, even when the check engine light is off.

We show this on a Jeep using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II full-system scanner, walking through where to find the misfire counter data, how to read it while the engine idles and under load, and how to use it to decide whether you are dealing with a bad ignition coil, worn spark plugs, a weak fuel injector, a vacuum leak, or low compression. We also cover why a flashing check engine light means an active misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, and related codes such as P0300 (random misfire), P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 (cylinder 1 through 4 misfire), and P0316 (misfire on startup).

This diagnostic method applies to all Jeep models, including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Gladiator, Patriot, and Liberty, and works the same way on Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat vehicles. The same approach applies to the 2.4L Tigershark and 1.4L MultiAir turbo engines shared with the Fiat 500X, Dodge Dart, and Chrysler 200.
