How to Jump Start a Ford Escape (2013-2019)
About this video
Ford Escape won’t start and just clicks? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic shows you how to safely jump start a 2013-2019 Ford Escape (third generation, including the 2017 facelift) with jumper cables or a portable jump pack.
SAFETY FIRST
Wear eye protection, keep sparks and open flames away from the battery, and never let the cable clamps touch each other. Do not jump a battery that is cracked, leaking, swollen, or frozen.
WHAT WE COVER
Battery location under the hood
Correct order to connect and disconnect the cables
Why the negative clamp goes to an engine ground point instead of the battery post, to protect the battery monitoring sensor
Jump starting from another vehicle or a portable jump starter
What to do after the jump so the battery can recharge
SIGNS OF A DEAD OR WEAK BATTERY
Single click or rapid clicking when you try to start
No crank at all, or very slow cranking
Dim or flickering dash lights
Multiple warning lights coming on at once
Auto Start Stop not available on 2017-2019 models
Radio and clock resetting
RELATED MODELS
The Ford Kuga and Lincoln MKC (2015-2019) share this platform and use a very similar jump start procedure. The Ford Focus and C-Max from the same era follow nearly the same steps.
Quick tip: if the Escape needs a jump more than once, have the battery and charging system tested. A jump gets you running, but it does not fix a failing battery.
