How to Reset and Calibrate HVAC Blend Door Actuators on a Jeep with a Scanner

Is your Jeep blowing air out of the wrong vents, stuck on hot or cold, or making a clicking noise under the dash? In this video, we show you step by step how to reset and calibrate the HVAC door actuators on a Jeep using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner. This video was filmed on a Jeep Renegade, but the procedure is the same on most other Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat models.

Your heating and AC system uses small electric motors called actuators to move the blend doors and mode doors inside the dash. These control the air temperature and which vents the air comes out of. When the actuators lose their calibration, which commonly happens after a battery disconnect, a dead battery, actuator replacement, or HVAC repair work, the system no longer knows the door positions. The result: air coming from the defrost or floor vents when you selected the dash vents, one side blowing hot while the other blows cold on dual zone systems, the temperature not matching what you set, or a repeated clicking or ticking noise under the dash as an actuator hits its stops.

We show you how to connect the YOUCANIC UCAN-II, navigate to the HVAC module, run the actuator calibration (also called HVAC recalibration or blend door relearn), and verify the system works correctly afterward. We also explain how to tell the difference between an actuator that just needs calibration and one that has failed and needs replacement, and how the scanner can read HVAC fault codes stored in the climate control module that a basic OBD2 code reader cannot see.

This procedure applies to Jeep models including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Gladiator, Patriot, and Liberty, and because the HVAC systems are shared across FCA / Stellantis vehicles, it also applies to many Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat models, including the Fiat 500X, which shares its platform with the Renegade.
