How to Retract the Rear Calipers on a Ford Escape With Electronic Parking Brake
About this video
Doing rear brakes on a Ford Escape with an electronic parking brake? You cannot just push the caliper piston back like on older cars. In this video, an ASE certified mechanic shows you how to put the rear brakes into service mode on a 2017-2019 Ford Escape (third generation facelift) so the caliper motors retract and you can replace the pads and rotors without damaging anything.
SAFETY FIRST
Chock the front wheels, since the parking brake will not hold the vehicle once it is in service mode. Support the vehicle on jack stands, never on a jack alone. Never force the piston back with a C clamp while the EPB motor is engaged.
WHAT WE COVER
Why vehicles with an electronic parking brake need a service mode
Putting the EPB into service or maintenance mode
Confirming the caliper motors have fully retracted
Turning service mode off and reapplying the parking brake after the job
What happens if you skip this step
SYMPTOMS AND MESSAGES YOU MAY SEE
Park Brake Malfunction or Service Park Brake message
Parking brake warning light staying on after a brake job
Grinding or clicking from the rear caliper motor
Parking brake will not release or will not apply
Electronic parking brake fault codes stored in the ABS or parking brake module
WHICH YEARS THIS APPLIES TO
The electronic parking brake was introduced with the 2017 facelift. 2013-2016 Escapes use a conventional parking brake lever and do not need this step.
RELATED MODELS
The Lincoln MKC shares the Escape platform and uses an electronic parking brake as well, and the Ford Kuga with EPB follows a similar process. Ford EPB service mode works on the same principle on other Fords with an electronic parking brake, such as the Edge, Fusion, and Explorer.
Quick tip: open the brake fluid reservoir cap and watch the level as the pistons go back, so the fluid does not overflow onto the paint.
