About this video

Did you know you can command your Jeep’s components to turn on and off directly from a scanner? In this video, we use the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner on a Jeep to demonstrate active tests (also called bi-directional controls or actuator tests), activating the wipers, rolling the windows up and down, running the fuel pump, and controlling other components on demand. We also show you exactly where to find the active test functions in the UCAN-II menu so you can follow along on your own vehicle.

Active tests are one of the most powerful diagnostic tools available, because they take the guesswork out of troubleshooting. Instead of wondering whether a fuel pump is dead or just not being commanded on, you command it directly from the scanner and listen for it to run. If the component works during the active test, the part is good and the problem is in the control side, like a relay, wiring, or module logic. If it does nothing, you have narrowed it down to the component or its power supply. We demonstrate several examples on the Jeep, including running the fuel pump without starting the engine, activating the windshield wipers, and moving the power windows up and down, and we go over other systems where active tests are available, such as cooling fans, door locks, horn, lights, and ABS components.

We also explain the difference between a basic OBD2 code reader and a bi-directional scan tool, since reading codes is one thing, but commanding components requires a full-system scanner with active test capability like the YOUCANIC UCAN-II.

This demonstration applies to Jeep models including the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Patriot, Liberty, and Gladiator. Because Jeep shares its electronics with other FCA / Stellantis brands, the same active test functions are available on Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat vehicles, including the Fiat 500X, and the concept works the same way across most makes and models supported by the scanner.
