Jeep Renegade Rear Brake Pads: How to Put the Electric Parking Brake in Service Mode
About this video
Changing the rear brake pads on a Jeep Renegade? Because the Renegade uses an electric parking brake (EPB), you must put the parking brake into service mode (also called maintenance mode or brake retract) BEFORE you compress the rear caliper pistons. In this video, we show you two ways to do it: using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner, and through the vehicle settings menu, so you can pick the method that works for you.
On vehicles with an electric parking brake, the rear calipers have a built-in electric motor that clamps the parking brake. If you try to press the caliper piston back without retracting the parking brake motor first, you can damage the EPB actuator, strip the internal mechanism, or trigger a SERVICE PARKING BRAKE or SERVICE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE warning with fault codes stored in the parking brake module. We show you how to enter service mode to fully retract the parking brake motors, how to verify the pistons are free before starting the pad replacement, and how to exit service mode and re-engage the parking brake after the new pads are installed, including letting the system self-adjust so the parking brake holds correctly.
Using the YOUCANIC UCAN-II full-system scanner, we navigate to the parking brake module and run the EPB service mode function, and we also demonstrate the settings menu method available on the Renegade for entering brake service mode without a scan tool. If you finished the job and now have a parking brake warning on the dash, the scanner can also read and clear the EPB fault codes.
This video was filmed on a Jeep Renegade and applies to the full first generation, model years 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, including the 2019 facelift models. The Fiat 500X shares the same platform and electric parking brake system, so this procedure applies to the 2016-2023 Fiat 500X as well, and the same concept applies to other Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo vehicles with an electric parking brake, including the Jeep Compass and Cherokee.
