Jeep “Service Hill Start Assist” Warning: What It Means and Common Causes

About this video

Is your Jeep showing a SERVICE HILL START ASSIST message on the instrument cluster? In this video, we explain what hill start assist is, why this warning comes on, the most common causes, and how to troubleshoot it step by step using a scanner.

Hill Start Assist (HSA) holds brake pressure for a couple of seconds when you take your foot off the brake on an incline, preventing the vehicle from rolling back while you move to the accelerator. It is not a standalone system: it works through the ABS and electronic stability control (ESC) system, using the wheel speed sensors, brake light switch, brake pressure sensor, and the ABS module. That means when the Service Hill Start Assist message appears, the actual fault is almost always in one of those shared components, and it often shows up together with the traction control light, ESC light, ABS light, or other service messages.

COMMON CAUSES WE COVER:
A faulty or misadjusted brake light switch (one of the most common causes, and a cheap fix), a weak or failing battery causing low system voltage (a very common trigger on Jeeps, especially in cold weather or after short trips), a faulty wheel speed sensor or damaged tone ring, a steering angle sensor that needs calibration, a brake pressure sensor fault, wiring or connector problems, and in some cases the ABS module itself. On manual transmission models, a faulty clutch pedal switch can also trigger the warning.

Because hill start assist lives in the ABS module, a basic OBD2 code reader usually will not show you the fault. We show you how to use a full-system scanner like the YOUCANIC UCAN-II to read the chassis codes behind the message, check live data such as wheel speed sensors and brake switch status, and pinpoint the cause. Related fault codes may include brake switch codes such as P0571 and C121C, wheel speed sensor codes in the C0031 to C003B range, steering angle sensor codes, and low voltage codes such as C2100.

This guide applies to Jeep models including the Renegade, Compass, Patriot, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Gladiator, and Liberty. Since hill start assist is shared across FCA / Stellantis vehicles, the same troubleshooting applies to Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, and Fiat models, including the Fiat 500X, which shares its platform with the Renegade.
