MAF Sensor Live Data Explained: How Many Grams Per Second Is Normal?
About this video
Got a P0101 or P0103 code, or wondering if your MAF sensor is bad? In this video, an ASE certified mechanic explains how the mass air flow sensor works, how to read MAF live data on a scan tool, how many grams per second is normal, and how to tell whether the MAF is really bad or something else is fooling it. We also show how the MAF, fuel trims, and oxygen sensors all work together, so you stop replacing sensors that were never the problem.
SAFETY FIRST
Keep hands, tools, and loose clothing clear of the belts and cooling fan when testing with the engine running. Have a helper watch the scan tool during a road test instead of reading live data while you drive.
WHAT WE COVER
How the MAF sensor measures the air entering the engine and why the computer uses it to calculate fuel
Reading MAF live data in grams per second, and how many grams per second is normal at idle and at higher RPM
The quick rule of thumb: at a warm idle, MAF reading in grams per second is roughly close to engine size in liters
Watching the MAF reading rise smoothly as you snap the throttle, and what flat spots or dropouts mean
Comparing MAF data to engine load, MAP sensor, RPM, and throttle position
How short term and long term fuel trims tell you if the MAF is reading too low or too high
Fuel trims high at idle but normal at higher RPM, which points to a vacuum leak
Fuel trims high across the whole RPM range, which points to a dirty MAF or a fuel delivery problem
How the upstream oxygen sensor or air fuel ratio sensor confirms what the MAF is saying
Unmetered air leaks after the MAF, such as a cracked intake boot or loose clamp
Dirty or oily MAF sensors from oiled air filters, and cleaning with MAF sensor cleaner only
Checking power, ground, and signal wiring at the MAF connector
SYMPTOMS OF A BAD OR DIRTY MAF SENSOR
Check engine light with P0101, P0102, or P0103
Rough idle, stalling, or stalling right after startup
Hesitation or stumble on acceleration
Lack of power or limp mode
Poor fuel economy
Black smoke or rich running, or lean codes on the other side
Hard starting
Harsh or odd shifting, because the transmission also uses engine load
RELATED FAULT CODES
P0100 MAF circuit malfunction
P0101 MAF circuit range or performance
P0102 MAF circuit low input
P0103 MAF circuit high input
P0104 MAF circuit intermittent
P0171 and P0174 system too lean
P0172 and P0175 system too rich
P0068 MAP and MAF throttle position correlation
P0113 intake air temperature sensor circuit high, often built into the MAF sensor
P2195 and P2196 oxygen sensor signal stuck lean or rich
This diagnostic process applies to nearly every vehicle with a mass air flow sensor, including Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti.
