Nissan Altima Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement (2013-2018) Step by Step

Home / Nissan Altima Mass Air Flow Sensor Replacement (2013-2018) Step by Step
⏱ 2:57 📅 Oct 30, 2026 ▶ Watch on YouTube

About this video

Rough idle, hesitation, stalling, or a check engine light with a mass air flow code? The MAF sensor gets blamed constantly, and it is often not the part that failed. An ASE certified mechanic shows how to test the sensor with live data first, when cleaning actually fixes it, and how to replace it correctly if it is truly bad.

SAFETY FIRST
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging the sensor so you do not set extra codes or damage the circuit. Work on a cool engine, keep hands clear of the cooling fan, and use only MAF specific cleaner. Brake cleaner, carb cleaner, and anything else will destroy the hot wire element instantly. Never touch the sensing wires with a rag, a brush, or your fingers.

WHAT WE COVER
How a mass air flow sensor works and what the computer does with the reading
Locating the MAF between the air box and the throttle body
Reading codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool
Checking live data for grams per second at idle and under load, and what a healthy reading should look like for your engine size
Comparing MAF reading against fuel trims to tell a dirty sensor from an unmetered air leak
Why a cracked intake boot, a loose air box lid, a dirty air filter, or a leaking PCV hose sets the same codes as a bad MAF
Removing the sensor without breaking the connector tabs
Cleaning the sensor properly with MAF cleaner and letting it dry completely before reinstall
Installing the new sensor in the correct orientation and seating the intake boot clamps
Clearing codes, relearning idle where required, and road testing to confirm the fix

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE
Rough idle, surging idle, or stalling right after startup
Hesitation or a flat spot when you accelerate
Reduced power or limp mode
Poor fuel economy and black smoke from running rich
Engine that starts and immediately dies, but runs if you feather the throttle
Stalling when you come to a stop or turn the wheel
Check engine light with mass air flow or lean codes
Symptoms that showed up right after an air filter change or an intake modification

RELATED FAULT CODES
Mass air flow codes such as P0100 circuit malfunction, P0101 range and performance, P0102 circuit low, P0103 circuit high, and P0104 intermittent. Closely related codes that often appear with a dirty or failing MAF include P0171 and P0174 system lean, P0172 rich, P0507 idle speed higher than expected, and intake air temperature codes P0111 through P0113 since many sensors house both elements in one unit.

DOES THIS APPLY TO MY CAR
Recorded on a 2018 Nissan Altima, fifth generation L33, sold 2013-2018 in the US with the facelift covering 2016-2018. It applies to 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Altima models with the 2.5L QR25DE four cylinder and the 3.5L VQ35DE V6. The QR25DE is also found in the Nissan Rogue, Sentra, X-Trail, and Frontier, and the VQ35DE is found in the Nissan Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Quest, 350Z, and Infiniti G35, M35, and FX35, so the sensor location and testing carry over to those vehicles. Nissan MAF sensors are a well known failure point across the lineup. The Altima is sold as the Nissan Teana in many markets. The test method applies to every OBD2 vehicle from 1996 and newer, any make, including Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Popular searches this video answers: MAF sensor replacement, how to clean a mass air flow sensor, P0101 code, P0171 lean code, bad MAF sensor symptoms, car stalls after starting, rough idle check engine light, mass air flow sensor live data grams per second, Nissan MAF sensor problems, can I drive with a bad MAF sensor.
