4WD Module
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
The 4WD Module (Transfer Case Control Module or TCCM) manages the electronic transfer case in four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, controlling the engagement and disengagement of 4WD modes (2H, 4H, 4L, Auto), front/rear torque distribution, and locking/unlocking the center differential. The module receives input from the 4WD selector switch, vehicle speed sensors, steering angle sensor, and throttle position to determine when and how to distribute power between the front and rear axles.
4WD module problems cause the 4WD warning light, inability to shift between 2WD and 4WD modes, grinding during mode changes, and the system defaulting to 2WD. Common DTCs are manufacturer-specific. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can read 4WD module codes, perform transfer case motor calibration, and in some vehicles command mode changes through Active Tests. Common causes of failure include the transfer case motor (encoder motor), mode fork position sensor, and the control module itself.
