CVT Reset

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

CVT Reset (CVT Adaptation Reset)

CVT Reset is a scanner function that clears and reinitializes the learned operating parameters for a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Unlike traditional automatic transmissions with fixed gear ratios, a CVT uses a steel belt or chain running between two variable-diameter pulleys to provide an infinite range of gear ratios. The TCM continuously learns and adapts the line pressure, pulley clamping force, belt/chain slip thresholds, and ratio change rates based on driving style, fluid condition, and component wear. Over time, these adaptation values can drift or become corrupted, particularly if the CVT fluid has degraded, causing symptoms like juddering, hesitation, or ratio hunting. A CVT Reset returns all learned parameters to their factory default values, allowing the TCM to relearn from a clean baseline.

This function is essential after performing a CVT fluid change (the fresh fluid has different friction characteristics than the old fluid, and the TCM’s adaptations for the old fluid will cause shift quality issues with the new fluid), after replacing CVT components (belt, pulleys, valve body, TCM), or when diagnosing CVT driveability complaints. Symptoms that improve after a CVT Reset include a shudder or vibration during light acceleration (especially at 15-40 mph), the RPM flaring or hunting during steady-state cruising, delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Drive, a sensation of the transmission slipping, and harsh engagement from a stop. On the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner, navigate to Maintenance > CVT, and the scanner will perform the adaptation reset and may also allow you to view CVT-specific live data such as primary and secondary pulley speed, belt slip ratio, line pressure, and CVT fluid temperature. Nissan/Infiniti, Subaru, Honda, and Toyota/Lexus CVTs are particularly common vehicles requiring this function. Always use the manufacturer-specified CVT fluid — CVT transmissions are extremely sensitive to fluid type, and using incorrect fluid will cause damage regardless of adaptation status.
