Freeze Frame Data
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Freeze frame data is a snapshot of your vehicle’s sensor readings that the ECU automatically captures and stores at the exact moment a fault code is triggered. Think of it as the vehicle’s black box for that specific fault event — it records critical parameters like engine RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, engine load, fuel trim values, and throttle position at the precise instant the problem occurred. This context is invaluable for diagnosis because many problems are intermittent and difficult to reproduce. For example, if a misfire code was triggered at high RPM under heavy load but the engine runs fine at idle, the freeze frame data tells that story clearly and points you toward fuel delivery or ignition components under load rather than an idle-related issue. Freeze frame data is accessible through any OBD2 scanner and should always be reviewed alongside the fault code itself for accurate diagnosis.
