GPF

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter Reset)

GPF Reset is a scanner function for managing the Gasoline Particulate Filter, the gasoline-engine equivalent of the diesel DPF that is becoming increasingly common on direct-injection gasoline vehicles starting from around 2017 onward, particularly European models (BMW, Mercedes, VW/Audi, and others) built to meet Euro 6d-TEMP and later emissions standards. Like a diesel DPF, the GPF captures soot particles generated during gasoline direct injection combustion — GDI engines produce significantly more particulate matter than port-injected engines because fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber, creating conditions where incomplete combustion produces fine carbon particles. The GPF goes through periodic regeneration where accumulated soot is burned off at high exhaust temperatures, and the ECU tracks soot loading, ash accumulation, and regeneration cycles.

The GPF Reset function on the YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner allows you to reset soot and ash accumulation counters after filter replacement, initiate a forced GPF regeneration, view GPF-specific live data (soot loading percentage, exhaust temperatures, differential pressure, regeneration history), and clear GPF-related DTCs. This function is needed after replacing the GPF, after repairing exhaust components near the GPF that may have affected sensor readings, when the GPF warning light remains illuminated after the root cause has been addressed, or when the vehicle has been driven exclusively in short-trip conditions that prevent natural regeneration. GPF issues are commonly caused by frequent short-distance driving (the exhaust never reaches regeneration temperature), oil dilution in the fuel system, spark plug misfires that dump unburned fuel into the GPF, or use of non-approved fuel additives. Unlike diesel DPFs, gasoline particulate filters are still relatively new to many DIYers, and this scanner function is becoming increasingly essential as more GPF-equipped vehicles enter the used car market.
