Pending Code
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
A pending code is a DTC the ECU detected during the current or recent drive cycle but has not yet met criteria to become confirmed and illuminate the check engine light. Most DTCs require detection on two consecutive drive cycles before maturing from pending to active — this two-trip logic prevents false alarms from one-time glitches. A pending code means the ECU saw something wrong once but needs confirmation. Some critical DTCs (severe misfires) skip pending and confirm immediately.
Pending codes are valuable for proactive maintenance. Finding pending codes with no check engine light means you caught a developing problem early. This is particularly useful before emissions inspections — a pending code means likely failure if the fault repeats. Your scanner accesses pending codes through Mode $07, separate from active codes in Mode $03. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II displays pending codes alongside active codes with clear status labels.
