Working on cars can be rewarding and help you save money, but safety should always be the number one priority. In this article, we go over some important things to keep in mind when working on cars.
Here is a list of safety precautions when working on any vehicle.
Secure Vehicle
Anytime you get under the vehicle, you must secure the car properly. Ensure that you do the following to guarantee your vehicle properly.
- Use jack stands in addition to your jack.
- Place vehicle in Park.
- Set the parking brakes.
- Park vehicle on a level ground
- Turn off the engine.
- Block wheels with wheel chocks or use rocks.
Allow Engine to Cool Down
If you are going to work on the engine, such as if you plan to replace the spark plugs or that oxygen sensor, you should make sure the engine is cooled down before you start working. A hot engine or catalytic converter can cause serious burns.
- Wait at least 30 min for the engine to cool down.
Disconnect Battery
Always disconnect the battery and remove the key from the ignition when working on your car. Especially when working on electrical components, including changing an alternator, changing spark plugs or ignition coils, checking fuses, etc.
All you need to do is disconnect the negative battery terminal. This black cable goes to the Neg (-) battery post.
Do not remove Radiator Cap.
Do not remove the radiator cap if your engine is hot. This will cause coolant to spray out of the radiator and cause injuries. Some newer cars have an explanation tank that can be topped off even when the engine is hot. If you are not sure, check in your owner’s manual.
Use Gloves and Glasses
When working on cars make sure to use gloves and eye protection. Keep the following in mind.
- Use gloves
- Use glasses
- Remove rings, necklaces, jewelry
- Tie long hair
Torque Bolts to Specification
You should use a torque wrench to torque bolts to specification. Torque specifications can be verified by calling your dealer.
Work in Ventilated Area
When working on a car, ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area. If you are working in your garage, make sure to keep the door open, especially if you are going to keep the engine running. Gas fumes can be very bad for your health.
- Don’t run the engine for long in an enclosed space.
Fire Extinguisher
Gasoline and other fluids can be very flammable. Keep a fire extinguisher near your work area.
These are the most basic things you need to remember when working on cars. Please use common sense.
