BAS
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
BAS (Brake Assist System), also called EBA (Emergency Brake Assist) or BA (Brake Assist), detects when the driver is attempting an emergency stop — characterized by rapid, forceful brake pedal application — and automatically supplements brake pressure to achieve maximum braking force faster than the driver’s foot alone can provide. Studies show that most drivers do not apply the brakes hard enough or fast enough during emergencies. BAS monitors brake pedal application speed through the brake pressure sensor or booster vacuum sensor and, when it detects panic braking characteristics, commands the ABS hydraulic modulator to boost pressure to near-maximum levels.
BAS operates within the ABS/ESC module and shares the same hardware. BAS faults are indicated by the ABS or brake warning lights and diagnosed through ABS module DTCs. BAS is often not separately identifiable in diagnostics — it is an algorithm within the ESC system software. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads ABS/ESC codes that may affect BAS operation.
