📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

DIS (Distributorless Ignition System) is the modern ignition design that eliminated the mechanical distributor by using individual ignition coils (COP — Coil-On-Plug) or coil packs (waste-spark) controlled directly by the ECU. The ECU determines firing order and timing electronically using CKP and CMP sensor inputs, commanding each coil to fire at the precisely calculated moment. DIS provides more accurate timing, higher available spark energy, reduced maintenance (no distributor cap, rotor, or mechanical advance to wear), and eliminates RF interference from distributor arcing.

Virtually all vehicles since the early 2000s use DIS. Diagnosis focuses on individual coil health, wiring integrity, and ECU driver circuit operation. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can perform ignition Active Tests to fire individual coils and run power balance tests. When diagnosing misfires on DIS systems, swapping coils between cylinders to see if the misfire follows the coil is the fastest diagnostic method.
