MFD
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
MFD (Multi-Function Display) is the configurable information screen integrated into the vehicle’s instrument cluster that displays various vehicle data including trip computer information (fuel economy, range, average speed), tire pressure readings, maintenance reminders (oil life, service intervals), driver assist system status, navigation turn-by-turn directions, phone information, and warning messages. Modern MFDs range from simple monochrome LCD segments to full-color high-resolution TFT screens that can display detailed vehicle system status, ADAS visualizations, and customizable gauge layouts.
MFD-related issues include pixel failure (dead segments on LCD displays), display dimming or blackout, incorrect information display, and communication errors between the instrument cluster module and other modules providing data (causing missing or incorrect readings). The instrument cluster module communicates with the BCM, ECU, TPMS, and other modules via CAN Bus to gather the data displayed on the MFD. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can read instrument cluster module codes and verify CAN Bus communication when MFD data is missing or incorrect.
