📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
A PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has a larger battery (8-18 kWh) chargeable from wall outlets or charging stations, providing 20-50 miles of electric-only range before the engine activates. Once depleted, it operates as a conventional hybrid. PHEVs offer daily electric commuting with unlimited gasoline range for longer trips.
PHEV diagnostics add the onboard charger module, charge port module, and battery thermal management to standard hybrid systems. Unique issues include charge port actuator failures, charger faults, and charge cable communication errors. All HEV high-voltage safety warnings apply equally.
