SAE
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers, now SAE International) is the organization that establishes automotive engineering standards used throughout North America and globally. In the context of battery ratings, SAE J537 defines the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) test standard: current delivered at 0°F (-18°C) for 30 seconds while maintaining 7.2V minimum. SAE CCA is the most widely used battery rating in the United States and Canada, printed prominently on virtually every battery sold in North America.
Beyond battery ratings, SAE establishes hundreds of automotive standards referenced throughout vehicle diagnostics: SAE J1962 (OBD2 DLC connector), SAE J1979 (OBD2 diagnostic services and PIDs), SAE J2012 (DTC definitions), SAE J1939 (heavy-duty vehicle protocol), SAE J2534 (pass-through programming standard), and many more. When your scanner communicates with a vehicle, it uses SAE-standardized protocols and data formats. DIYers most commonly encounter SAE in the context of battery specifications — always match or exceed the SAE CCA rating when replacing a battery.
