Self-Diagnostics
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Self-diagnostics refers to a vehicle’s built-in capability to continuously monitor emissions-related and safety-critical systems, detect malfunctions, store DTCs, and alert the driver through warning lights. Mandated by OBD-II regulations since 1996, the ECU runs specific monitors on the catalytic converter, O2 sensors, EGR, EVAP, fuel system, misfire detection, and comprehensive component monitoring. Each monitor has pass/fail thresholds — when performance falls outside limits for the required drive cycles, the ECU stores a DTC and illuminates the MIL.
DIYers can proactively access self-diagnostic results using a scanner: check readiness monitor status (which tests have passed), view Mode $06 test results (actual values vs. thresholds), and read pending codes for developing problems. Understanding that the vehicle constantly tests itself explains why driving patterns matter — monitors only run under specific conditions, which is why completing a drive cycle requires varied driving. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II provides full access to monitor status, Mode $06, and pending codes.
