Tone Ring

« Back to Glossary

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

The ABS tone ring, also called a reluctor ring or exciter ring, is a toothed metal ring mounted on the axle shaft, CV joint, or wheel hub that works in conjunction with the ABS wheel speed sensor to generate a signal representing wheel rotational speed. As the tone ring spins, its evenly spaced teeth pass by the magnetic wheel speed sensor, creating an alternating voltage signal (AC signal) whose frequency increases proportionally with wheel speed. The ABS module reads this frequency from all four wheels simultaneously to detect when any wheel is about to lock up during braking. Modern vehicles use two types of tone rings: passive systems with machined steel rings that produce a sinusoidal AC signal, and active systems with magnetic encoder rings that produce a square wave digital signal readable at much lower speeds (including near-zero for traction control and stability systems).

A damaged or contaminated tone ring causes erratic ABS wheel speed sensor readings, triggering the ABS warning light and often the traction control and stability control lights simultaneously. Common DTCs include C0035-C0050 (wheel speed sensor circuit range/performance) and C0221-C0229 (wheel speed signal erratic). Symptoms include unexpected ABS activation during normal braking at low speeds, traction control engaging when it shouldn’t, speedometer fluctuations, and in some vehicles transmission shifting problems because the TCM uses wheel speed data. Tone rings can crack from heat cycling, lose teeth from corrosion (especially on rear axle-mounted rings), or accumulate metallic debris from brake pad wear that confuses the sensor. DIYers should visually inspect the tone ring for missing teeth, cracks, rust buildup between teeth, or excessive runout (wobble). On vehicles with rear-axle-mounted rings, the ring can be replaced separately, but hub-mounted tone rings typically require full hub assembly replacement. Clean any metallic debris from the sensor tip and tone ring teeth with brake cleaner during inspection.
