Valvetronic

« Back to Glossary

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

Valvetronic is BMW’s variable valve lift system that continuously adjusts intake valve lift from near-zero to full lift, effectively controlling engine load by varying how much the intake valve opens rather than restricting airflow with a throttle plate. This eliminates throttling losses (the energy wasted pumping air past a partially closed throttle), improving fuel efficiency by 10-12%. The system uses an eccentric shaft driven by a dedicated electric motor, acting on intermediate levers between the camshaft and the valve follower to vary the effective valve lift. Valvetronic works in conjunction with Double VANOS for comprehensive valve event control.

Valvetronic problems include eccentric shaft sensor failure (causing limp mode or rough idle), motor failure (loss of valve lift control), and adaptation issues after servicing. DTCs: BMW-specific Valvetronic codes for motor, sensor, and adaptation errors. After Valvetronic motor replacement or BMW engine work, performing a Valvetronic adaptation reset through the YOUCANIC UCAN-II is necessary to calibrate the eccentric shaft position. The system’s complexity means that even minor faults can cause significant driveability issues since it replaces the throttle body’s function.
