VIN
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code assigned to every motor vehicle, serving as the vehicle’s permanent identifier throughout its lifetime. The VIN encodes specific information: characters 1-3 identify the manufacturer and country of origin (World Manufacturer Identifier), characters 4-8 describe the vehicle attributes (engine, body style, restraint system), character 9 is a check digit for VIN validation, character 10 indicates model year, character 11 identifies the assembly plant, and characters 12-17 are the sequential production number.
Your scanner reads the VIN through OBD2 Mode $09, and many functions — including Auto Scan, Service Functions, and code definitions — use the VIN to identify the exact vehicle configuration for accurate diagnostics. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II uses VIN identification to automatically select the correct vehicle profile, ensuring you get model-specific code definitions, live data parameters, and service functions. The VIN is physically located on the dashboard (visible through the windshield on the driver’s side) and on the driver’s door jamb sticker. Always verify the scanner-read VIN matches the physical VIN to ensure you are diagnosing the correct vehicle configuration.
