What Is the Difference Between Current and Stored Fault Codes?

← Back to All Questions
Home › Questions & Answers › What Is the Difference Between Current and Stored Fault Codes?
Beginner Applies to: UCAN-II, UCAN-II Pro

When scanning your vehicle, you will see two types of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):

  • Current fault codes: These indicate problems the vehicle’s system is detecting right now. These are active issues that need attention.
  • Stored fault codes: These are issues that were detected in the past and recorded by the vehicle’s computer. They may no longer be active but the record remains in the system.

Understanding this distinction helps you determine whether a problem is ongoing or has already been resolved. After repairs, clear the codes and drive for 30+ minutes — any codes that return indicate an unresolved issue.
