YOUCANIC Joins the Fight for Your Right to Repair at Capitol Hill Event
It’s been a big week for the Right to Repair movement, and YOUCANIC was right at the center of it.
On April 9, 2025, the CAR Coalition hosted a powerful event on Capitol Hill—“CARs and Coffee”—bringing together lawmakers, repair advocates, technicians, and industry leaders to talk about one thing: your right to choose how and where your car gets fixed.
The highlight? The introduction of the bipartisan, bicameral REPAIR Act (H.R.1566/S.1379) in both the House and the Senate is an important piece of legislation designed to stop automakers from locking consumers and independent repair shops out of essential diagnostic and repair functions.

YOUCANIC founder Rushit Hila PE and ASE-certified, was invited to join alongside lawmakers and industry leaders to share how real-world repairs are being impacted by these increasingly restrictive practices.
“Car manufacturers are increasingly using software restrictions and coding requirements to control repairs and to lock out independent mechanics and DIYers,” Hila said. “What used to be simple maintenance—like changing a battery or resetting an oil light—now requires dealer tools or proprietary software. More advanced repairs, such as sensor calibrations or module replacements, are by design impossible without factory-level access. This drives up repair costs and limits consumer choice.”

The REPAIR Act is sponsored in the House by Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL), who didn’t mince words about why this legislation is needed:
“Your vehicle belongs to you, not the manufacturer,” Dunn said. “I am introducing the REPAIR Act to provide a binding, workable solution to anti-competitive behavior in the auto repair industry.”
If passed, the REPAIR Act would ensure fair access to vehicle data and tools—giving back control to car owners and independent repair shops across the country.
At YOUCANIC, we’ve long believed that every driver deserves access to the knowledge and tools to fix their own car. That’s why we make DIY repair guides and diagnostic tools accessible to everyday drivers, not just dealer technicians.
