The Challenge: A Mysterious No-Start Problem
Philip Warner faced a frustrating and elusive issue with his 2022 Toyota Hilux 2.8L diesel: the truck would intermittently crank but fail to start. Over a span of just 10 miles, the vehicle failed six times, ultimately requiring multiple roadside assistance visits and a tow home by a breakdown recovery service.
What made the situation more difficult was that the problem appeared to resolve itself temporarily, only to return a few miles later. Despite driving thousands of trouble-free miles prior, the issue began after Philip parked the Hilux nose-up on a hill following a 150-mile trip. This minor detail turned out to be a critical clue.

Initial Diagnosis: No Fault Codes Found
Using the YOUCANIC scanner, Philip began his investigation. Surprisingly, the scanner showed no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) . Philip’s hands-on inspection revealed that air had entered the fuel delivery line—likely due to the vehicle being parked nose-up. This allowed air to migrate toward the engine, leading to inconsistent fuel delivery and starting problems. Although four separate breakdown mechanics had inspected the system, none identified the underlying issue.
Further investigation uncovered that one of the fuel lines had been connected incorrectly and was slightly twisted, which interfered with the proper flow from the rear tank.
He also found that the fuel filter canister assembly required precise reinstallation. The four arrows on the housing had to align perfectly,…
