DRL
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
DRL (Daytime Running Lights) are front-facing lights that illuminate automatically when the vehicle is running, increasing the vehicle’s visibility to other drivers during daylight hours. DRLs operate at reduced brightness compared to headlights to minimize glare and energy consumption. They may use dedicated LED strips, dimmed headlights, or the turn signal filaments at reduced power. DRLs are mandatory in Canada and many European countries, and standard on most US vehicles though not federally required. The BCM or lighting control module manages DRL activation based on ignition status, ambient light sensor input, and headlight switch position.
DRL failures are typically caused by burned-out bulbs or LEDs, BCM programming issues, ambient light sensor faults, or a faulty DRL relay/module. On vehicles with LED DRLs integrated into the headlight assembly, a failed LED strip often requires replacing the entire headlight assembly — an expensive repair. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads BCM lighting codes and can verify DRL module programming.
