EBD
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) is an ABS sub-function that dynamically adjusts the brake pressure ratio between front and rear axles based on real-time vehicle loading, deceleration rate, and individual wheel behavior. EBD replaces the mechanical proportioning valve used in older vehicles, providing more precise and adaptive brake force distribution. During braking, weight transfers forward — EBD reduces rear brake pressure to prevent rear wheel lockup before the fronts, maintaining vehicle stability. EBD adjusts for varying loads — a vehicle with a heavy trunk load gets more rear brake pressure than an empty vehicle.
EBD operates transparently within the ABS system and has no separate warning light — EBD faults are indicated by the ABS and/or brake warning lights. Because EBD uses the same wheel speed sensors and hydraulic modulator as ABS, any ABS sensor or hydraulic fault also disables EBD. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II ABS module diagnostics cover EBD-related faults as part of the overall braking system scan.
