Freeze Frame
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Freeze frame data is a snapshot of key engine operating parameters captured by the ECU at the exact moment a DTC is triggered. Accessed through OBD2 Mode $02, it includes engine RPM, vehicle speed, calculated load, coolant temperature, fuel trim values, fuel system status, intake pressure or MAF airflow, and ignition timing. This data reveals what the engine was doing when the fault occurred — idling or cruising, cold or warm, under load or at rest — transforming a generic fault code into actionable diagnostic information.
Freeze frame is one of the most underutilized diagnostic tools. Instead of just reading a code and guessing at parts, freeze frame reveals the conditions that caused the fault. For example, P0171 (System Too Lean) with freeze frame showing idle speed and warm engine strongly points to a vacuum leak, while the same code at highway speed under load points to a fuel delivery problem. Always record freeze frame before clearing codes — once cleared, this information is permanently deleted.
