HO2S
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) is the standard O2 sensor type with a built-in heater bringing the sensing element to operating temperature (~600F) within 20-30 seconds, enabling closed-loop fuel control much faster than waiting for exhaust heat alone. The ECU monitors heater circuit current and resistance, controlling it via duty-cycle ground signal or relay.
Heater circuit failures are extremely common, generating P0030-P0068 DTCs. Symptoms from heater failure alone are subtle — slightly rougher cold-start and marginally worse economy — but the vehicle will fail emissions because the heater monitor will not pass. Before replacing the sensor, check the O2 heater fuse, inspect wiring for heat damage, and test heater resistance at the connector (typically 2-15 ohms, open circuit = failure). Wiring and connectors fail almost as often as the sensor itself.
