Quick Scan

« Back to Glossary

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

Quick Scan performs a fast diagnostic code read from the engine ECU using standard OBD2 protocol. It sends standardized requests to read confirmed DTCs (Mode $03), pending DTCs (Mode $07), and readiness monitor status from the engine ECU only. This is the fastest way to check if the check engine light has a stored code, typically completed in under 10 seconds. Quick Scan uses generic OBD2 protocol that works on all 1996+ US vehicles regardless of manufacturer.

The limitation is that Quick Scan only accesses the engine module — it will not read codes from transmission, ABS, airbag, BCM, TPMS, or other modules. If your check engine light is off but another warning light is on, Quick Scan shows no codes even though faults exist in other modules. For comprehensive diagnostics, follow up with Auto Scan that accesses all modules using enhanced manufacturer protocols. Think of Quick Scan as a fast engine-only health check.
