R2R
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
R2R (Right to Repair) is the movement advocating for vehicle owners and independent repair shops to have the same access to diagnostic data, repair procedures, software updates, and specialized tools that manufacturers provide to their franchise dealerships. As vehicles become increasingly software-dependent, manufacturers have restricted access to diagnostic information, module programming, and security-related functions, making it difficult or impossible for independent shops and DIYers to perform certain repairs. R2R legislation, most notably the Massachusetts Right to Repair law (2012, expanded 2020), requires manufacturers to provide access to diagnostic data through standard OBD-II and telematics systems.
R2R is directly relevant to YOUCANIC’s mission of empowering DIY car owners. Tools like the YOUCANIC UCAN-II represent the R2R philosophy — providing professional-grade diagnostic capabilities to vehicle owners. R2R continues to evolve as manufacturers push more functions to proprietary cloud-based systems and over-the-air updates. Supporting R2R legislation ensures vehicle owners maintain the ability to choose where and how their vehicles are repaired.
