Readiness Monitors
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
Readiness Monitors are the OBD2 self-diagnostic test routines that the ECU runs to verify emissions-related components and systems are functioning within acceptable parameters. There are two types: continuous monitors that run constantly (misfire, fuel system, comprehensive component) and non-continuous monitors that only run under specific conditions (catalyst, heated catalyst, EVAP, EGR, O2 sensor, O2 sensor heater, secondary air, and A/C refrigerant on some vehicles). Each monitor’s status is reported as either complete/ready (the test has run and the system passed) or not complete/not ready (the test has not yet run during this drive cycle sequence).
Monitor status is critical for emissions inspections — most states require all monitors or all but one to show complete for the vehicle to pass. After clearing codes or battery disconnect, all monitors reset to not ready and must be driven through their specific enable conditions to complete. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II displays all monitor statuses at a glance, clearly showing which have completed and which are pending. If a specific monitor will not complete after multiple drive cycles, it typically indicates an underlying problem with that system preventing the monitor from passing — investigate related DTCs or pending codes.
