TCS
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
TCS (Traction Control System) prevents driven wheel spin during acceleration by detecting when one or both driven wheels are spinning faster than the non-driven wheels (or faster than the vehicle’s actual speed). When wheel spin is detected, TCS intervenes by reducing engine torque (through throttle reduction, ignition retard, or fuel cut) and/or applying the brake to the spinning wheel, transferring torque to the wheel with grip. TCS uses the same wheel speed sensors as ABS and is typically integrated into the ABS/ESC control module.
TCS is often abbreviated differently by manufacturers: TRAC (Toyota), ASR (European), TRC (Lexus), and ETC (others). The TCS warning light illuminates when the system detects a fault, and a flashing TCS light during driving indicates active intervention. Common causes of TCS faults mirror ABS issues — wheel speed sensor failures, tone ring damage, and module faults. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads TCS codes within the ABS/ESC module. TCS can be disabled on most vehicles for situations where wheel spin is desired (rocking out of snow, track driving).
