Know Steering Wheel Position Angle Value in Degrees
Guide on how to check the steering wheel angle sensor on a Mercedes-Benz. This procedure can also be used on other vehicle models. You will need a YOUCANIC full-system diagnostic scanner to determine your steering wheel’s angle.
Check Steering Wheel Angle Sensor
Method 1: Using the Screen of the Backup Camera
This method does not give you the angle in degrees. If you need the angle in degrees, see method two.
- Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the accessories position.
- Turn the steering wheel and set it to the center or straight position.
- Set the gear shift to the reverse position.
Look on the screen of the backup camera, and if the vehicle’s wheel is in a straight position and the lines on the screen of the backup camera are curved, then there’s a problem with the vehicle’s steering wheel angle sensor or clock spring.
Method 2: Using a YOUCANIC Full System Scanner
You will need a full system diagnostic scanner to determine the steering wheel angle.
- Connect the Full System Scanner to the Vehicle.
- Go to the Electronic Power Steering menu on the scanner.
- Press Read Data Stream and select Steering Angle on the scanner.
- Turn the steering wheel to the right or the left and check the values shown on the scanner. If the scanner’s value exceeds 720°, then there’s a problem with the vehicle’s steering wheel angle sensor or clock spring.
Check the ABS control module or stability control option if you can not find the steering angle setting in the power steering module. Usually, you can also see the steering angle in degrees under these modules by displaying live data.
