BMS (Battery Management System)
The battery management system is an electronic module found in most vehicles built after 2005 that monitors the health, state of charge, and charging behavior of the 12-volt battery. Unlike older vehicles where you could swap a battery and drive away, modern cars with a BMS need to be informed when a new battery is installed so the system can reset its learned charging parameters and begin a fresh monitoring cycle. Without resetting the BMS after a battery replacement, the alternator may overcharge or undercharge the new battery based on data from the old one, significantly shortening battery life and potentially causing electrical issues. Symptoms of BMS problems or a missed reset include premature battery failure, battery warning lights, electrical gremlins, start-stop system malfunctions, and fault codes related to battery voltage or charging. Resetting the BMS requires a scan tool that supports this function — it’s one of the features built into the UCAN-II scanner.
