📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
CEL (Check Engine Light) is the informal term for the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Steady on = confirmed fault, diagnose soon. Flashing = active severe misfires risking catalytic converter damage — reduce load immediately. The CEL only covers emissions-related powertrain faults; ABS, SRS, and TPMS have separate warning lights.
When the CEL illuminates, connect a scanner and read DTCs and freeze frame data. Common misconception: CEL does not always mean expensive repairs — a loose gas cap triggers P0440-P0457. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II reads all engine codes with enhanced manufacturer-specific definitions.
Synonyms:
Check Engine Light, Engine Light, Service Engine Soon, SES
